Images: production stills from software driven animations depicting both global shipping and national  patterns; sculptures cast from fungus, plant cellulose and salt

I have a new body of multimedia work, premiering at bitforms gallery in NY in February 2016, and I’m looking to trade artwork or services (conversation, presentation, participatory workshops) in exchange for support, that will help to further my research.

The new work, MORE&MORE, is a multi-faceted art project and an inquiry into the complex interplay between global trade, shipping, import / export, legal / illegal exchange of goods and people, the deep sea, deep time, and the weather. The project focuses on commercial port activity, container ships, and the ocean.

More&More’s first exhibition will be composed of software-driven animations, data-driven textile patterns turned into swimsuits, and sculptures of top-trafficked and traded exports that are made from 3D printed originals, that are cast, and then created in salt, chocolate and fungus (respectively).

BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

I am a media artist focused on near-impossible nature and culture intersections. My work aims to contribute to new, conscious relationships as globalized humans with the biosphere.  I research “wicked problems” such as invasive species, superfund sites, and petroleum interdependence.  Using life science, bio materials, animation, dinners and software technologies, I often work across disciplines. As my work has deepened, I have created participatory projects to augment the seductive qualities of animation and gallery works. Currently, I’m interested in connecting cities’ rivers to oceans, and researching the tensions between marine ecologies and the oceans’ use as an import/export highway.

I am a 2011 John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fellow, and have been granted awards from the New York Foundation for the Arts, New York State Council for the Arts, the Rockefeller Foundation, and Creative Capital. I am on full time faculty at ITP / Tisch School of the Arts, and represented by bitforms gallery.
