“When I lived in Varanasi, regarded as the spiritual capital of India, I developed a walk as a pilgrimage – circling the Ganges River, the river that draws pilgrims who bath in the dirty and sacred waters, believed to be the Hindu goddess Ganga. I completed this walk several times, sharing the experience with many people who joined me.
I have the desire to walk around Manhattan as well, as if Manhattan is another Varanasi, a city we carry inside our hearts and mark with our feet. Friends, strangers and others are invited to join me for Circling Manhattan to honor and discover the city in a new way.” Alexandros Georgiou
Additional text by Alexandros about the ideas behind Circling Manhattan, may be found here.
Circling Manhattan is a walk around the entire island of Manhattan, starting at 5:30 am on June 27th in front of the historic landmark, the Intrepid at Pier 86, W 45th St and 12th Ave, New York, NY 10036 (west side of Manhattan) and moving clockwise with the goal to complete the circle.
During Circling Manhattan, Alexandros will relate stories from his walks in India and NYC, as well as speak about his process using photography to highlight overlooked details in the cityscape. Walkers are welcome to take photographs along the way and tweet them @ExchangeWorksUS #CirclingManhattan.
Though this is a group walk with breaks and discussions, walkers are encouraged to enjoy the full experience of circling Manhattan from their own perspective. All are welcome to participate in the entire 32-mile walk around Manhattan, yet anyone can join along the way or stop at any time.
The walk can be followed on Twitter @ExchangeWorksUS #CirclingManhattan where updates regarding breaks and meeting locations will be posted every hour.
*We will be sending all participants more information about rest stops, bathroom breaks, etc. Please be prepared for a long walk and bring food, water, an umbrella, sunscreen, a hat and extra socks in a small daypack. Here are tips to stay hydrated and a map of public bathrooms around NYC.
Join us for Circling Manhattan rain or shine!
